GEOCARDINAL Engineering Services, in conjunction with the Council of Mining Engineers and Geoscientists (COMEG) has set machineries in motion to work on modalities for repositioning the Council to meet international Standards.
This repositioning agenda was disclosed to the university community when the Lead Consultant at GeoCardinal Engineering Services, Engr. Titilope Adeyemo, and his counterpart, the Registrar of COMEG, Professor Zacheus O. Opafunso, paid a working visit on the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Prof. Joseph Adeola Fuwape, during COMEG 5-Day Professional Training in Akure, Ondo State.
The Lead Consultant at Geocardinal Engineering Services, Engr. Titilope Adeyemo, implored the VC to educate the professionals on the relevance, possibility and advantages inherent in being registered members of more than one relevant professional bodies – COREN and COMEG, giving himself as an example of an active member of both bodies.
Adeyemo observed that thousands of professionals abound in the university community but very few of them were registered with COMEG, stressing that the error could now be rectified through the support of the VC and his team.
The consultant enjoined the VC and his team to use their offices to encourage the relevant candidates within their domain to register with COMEG and be up to date with their membership so that they can enjoy the benefits of such trainings planned for all the zones of the country in the course of the year.
In his remark, the COMEG Registrar, Prof. Opafunso, enumerated the objective of the 5-day professional training programme with the theme: PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TRAINING WORKSHOP ON MINERAL REPORTING STANDARDS.
The training, according to him, was organized for COMEG recognized competent persons, noting that the rational for organizing such in Akure this time was primarily the abundance of assorted Mineral Resources deposits as confirmed by Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu when he met with the duo earlier. He announced the readiness of the Governor to work with the Council to achieve the objectives set by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The Registrar explained to the VC that the Federal Government has placed great importance on the extractive sector as one of the major focuses of this administration to diversify the economy, and as such, all hands must be on deck to ensure that the Council of Mining Engineers and Geoscientists (COMEG) succeeds in its mandate as the foremost regulator of the professionals in the sector.
The VC, in his response, appreciated COMEG and GEOCARDINAL for involving FUTA in the quest for proper certification of professionals in Mining and Geosciences, so as to make them at par with their counterparts globally, thereby making them properly placed to sign acceptable Mineral Reports, instead of going all over the world looking for signatories when local scientists are the ones doing both the “brain work as well as the leg work.”
He promised to always be open to give any assistance needed of him, emphasizing that “our scientists are ripe to write our reports as they have the skill and training required of them.”
