From Joe Adedeji, Ilorin
The Head of the Ilorin Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Isyaku Sharu, has counseled Nigerian youths, particularly students, to stay away from criminal tendencies.
This, the anti-graft agency boss said was the best guarantee for them to have a great future.
He made the appeal while fielding questions on a University of Ilorin radio station (Unilorin 89.3 FM) current affairs programme,;”Table Talk”.
The Crime Buster, who is an Assistant Commissioner of Police, decried the increasing pervasiveness of cyber crimes, otherwise called “Yahoo-Yahoo”, amongst contemporary youths.
He asserted that many of the suspects currently being investigated for one form of financial crime or the other were card-carrying students of several institutions of higher learning across Nigeria.
Although Shar did not specify the apprehension of any student of the University of Ilorin for financial crimes, he stated that EFCC would in strict adherence to the laws, stop at nothing in the eradication of the scourge.
Mr. Sharu said he was particularly disturbed by the rate and high number of students who get themselves involved in the swindling of innocent individuals and organisations of their hard-earned resources.
He charged students to face their studies squarely and never be enchanted with the get-rich-quick syndrome, which often propels the misguided ones into criminalities.
He further counseled that the sky could not limit the success of those who are hardworking, honest and law-abiding.
Mr. Sharu, who explained that the laws guiding the activities of his Commission have no respect for the age of suspects, reiterated the commitment of the EFCC to continue to do everything within its capacity to bring the pathetic incidence of criminality down.
He added that the Commission was ready to address every information brought to its attention without any special treatment for age or any other stratification into which the suspect may fall.
He implored students to attach greater importance to moral values and respect for constituted authorities at all times and on all issues for them not to find themselves on the wrong side of the law.
