Osun State Governor, Alhaji Adegboyega Oyetola has called on the Federal Government to commence immediate massive recruitment of local people into the Nigeria Police Force to cambat the challenge of insecurity in the country.

Oyetola maintained that insufficient number of police personnel is largely responsible for the difficulty being experienced in tackling the problem of insecurity in Nigeria.

He added that massive recruitment of more officers with focus on youths from across all localities would go a long way to stem the ugly tide of insecurity in the country.

The Governor made this call on Monday during the South-West Geopolitical Security Summit convened by the Inspector General of Police, IGP Mohammed Abubakar Adamu and held in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

According to him, recruiting the youths among the locals would make policing more effective and efficient since such youths are conversant with their respective communities and the residents therein.

He commended the Nigerian police under the leadership of IGP Mohammed Abubakar Adamu for their commitment to the battle against insecurity adding that his government has remained committed to its core constitutional responsibilities of providing security for the people and catering for their welfares.

He said, “Osun is blessed with security personnel who are committed and disciplined. As a government, we have been very supportive to the Force. We have 25 amour carriers and helipad to carry out surveillance in the entire state in collaboration with security agencies.

“I must state here that Nigeria is under policed. If we must succeed in this collective battle against insecurity, the Federal Government would need to recruit more police personnel with attention on the peculiarities of each of the states.

“There is need to recruit the youths among the locals into the police force and post them to their communities. If we do this, we will definitely get a good result because they are very familiar with their communities and their people.

“I want to commend the security actions by the south-west Governors. Osun State is adjudged the most peaceful state in the country and no effort will be spared to maintain this status. Rest assured that Osun is willing to adopt and implement whatever decisions taken at this Summit.”
