Gbajabiamila emerges as Speaker, House of Reps

Femi Gbajabiamila of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has been elected the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Gbajabiamila who polled 281 votes from a total of 358 votes, defeated Umar Bago from Niger State and candidate of People’s Democratic Party, PDP, who scored 76 votes. There was one invalid vote in the election..
Gbajabiamila, who represents Surulere, Lagos State federal constituency, was the APC Majority Leader and the House Leader of 8th House of Representatives. He won by a landslide 79.05 percent of the votes cast.

A total of 358 House of Representatives members cast their votes on the floor of the House.
Gbajabiamila contested in 2015 for the Speakership position but lost narrowly with nine votes to Yakubu Dogara.
Also, Ahmed Wase from Plateau State was elected unopposed as Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives.
