The Federal Government has been dragged to court by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) for blocking as many as 72m phone lines in Nigeria via instructions to the telecommunications companies, without putting adequate logistics on ground, thereby disconnecting its citizens from the world.
Recall that a whole lot of telecommunication companies in Nigeria had, on March 4, 2022 responded to FG’s instruction to bar outgoing calls of millions of subscribers whose SIMs were not linked to their National Identification Numbers (NINs),a directive that affected as many as 72m subscribers.
But suing the FG before a Federal High Court in Lagos, SERAP argued that government’s action was arbitrary and inconsiderate, noting that a whole lot of Nigerians, including persons living with disabilities, elderly citizens, persons living in remote areas have, so far, not captured their biometrics, and obtained their NINs. This, it said, was pursuant to “logistic challenges, administrative and bureaucratic burdens, as well as the persistent collapse of the national grid.”/SHARE THIS
