Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State has stated that paucity of funds compelled the federal government to stop states from rehabilitating of Federal roads.
Hitherto, state governments which rehabilitated federal roads have been reimbursed later.
Fayemi said his government was ready to fix some of the federal roads in the state but had to soft pedal due to the advice from the Federal Government that there won’t be refund on such interventions.
The Governor disclosed this today in Ado-Ekiti at a colloquium to mark the first anniversary of his second coming. Tagged ‘Building a Sustainable Economy Through Values Orientation and Innovative Thinking’, he said he would have loved to do some of these roads but the Federal Government warned him against it.
He said: “They made it clear that if any state rehabilitates any road, there won’t be refunds and this is because there is no money.
“This year, FG budgeted around N250 billion for roads. If the government is to complete Lagos-Ibadan, Kaduna-Abuja and Kaduna-Kano expressways, it will cost a sum of N500 billion out of about 36,000 kilometres of roads waiting for rehabilitation.”
