Pix(above, R-L): Wike and Obi
At last, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has revealed real reasons he did not support the presidential ambition of the Labour Party candidate, Mr. Peter Obi at the recently-concluded February 25 general election.
The Governor said he didn’t support Obi because nobody discussed the Igbo presidency with him.
Revealing this on Friday in Enugu, the Publicity Secretary of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Alex Ogbonnia, stated that Wike made the declaration at a meeting the socio-political group had with him in Port Harcourt, on Thursday.
“At the meeting, Ohanaeze Ndigbo confronted Mr. Wike over his alleged role against Mr. Obi during the presidential election.
“Answring, he expressed surprise that Ohanaeze was on a fact-finding mission and would explain his role in the presidential election,” Ogbonnia stresed.
According to Ogbonnia, the Governor explained that the Southern Governors Forum first met in Asaba and agreed that power must shift to the South after President Muhammadu Buhari.
He also explained that the Governors later met in Enugu in September 2021 to reaffirm their position for power to shift to the South, noting that “the issue of presidency to the South-East was never specifically on the table.”
Wike also explained that throughout his political adventure, he tried as much as possible to maintain the position of the southern governors and expressed disgust that during the PDP presidential primary, several well-known people from the South-East betrayed him and sabotaged the southern interest by voting for Atiku Abubakar, who is from the North.
He added: “my unalloyed commitment to the South motivated me to provide logistics for Obi when he was in Rivers for the presidential campaign
“But I refused to provide even a campaign ground for Abubakar, the presidential candidate of my party, the Peoples Democratic Party.
“What is circulating on the social media is the handiwork of Wike adversaries. For instance, the ‘Full Audio of Governor Wike Caught on Tape Arranging Bribe for INEC Officials’ and published by an online medium, has been on YouTube since December 16, 2016,” Wike told Ohanaeze.
The Rivers Governor explained that “some mischief-makers were using doctored and false audio and visual materials on the internet to dent his image.
“I am a man with the courage of my convictions and have no reasons to tell lies or to owe apology to anyone. I am always ready to defend my actions any day and at any time, and I did not rig the presidential election against Obi.”
Describing the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as the hero of the just-concluded election, Wike said his active participation stopped the North from retaining power after President Muhammadu Buhari, which was the original plan.
The Governor explained that contrary to insinuation that he did not support Peter Obi, most people failed to realise that LP candidate was his hero of the election.
He said: “Obi is my hero. If Obi did not contest, power would have gone back to the North. The whole of South south and Southeast that PDP lost, if Obi did not contest, PDP would have won.
“The hero of this election is Obi whether you like it or not. I am not here to please you, Obi is the hero. He may not have been pronounced as the winner, no problem, but the law will take its course.”/ SHARE THIS
