The UK will be hit with heavy rain, thundery storms and strong winds over the next few days, as the unsettled spring weather continues.

Scotland and Northern Ireland are braced for heavy showers later on Wednesday, while both rain and sunny spells are expected in Wales and southwest England.

Conditions in southeast England will become overcast and cloudy by Wednesday evening.

“The next few days will be unsettled and changeful,” said Richard Miles, a meteorologist at the Met Office.

“There will be quite a bit of rain.”

Temperatures will drop to 5C in western England overnight, with 3C expected in rural areas and in northern England and Scotland.

Thundery showers are possible on Thursday and are most likely to occur in southwest England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

“The heaviest showers are likely in the southwest,” Mr Miles said.

“But the rain will be more persistent in Scotland.”

The unsettled weather is driven by the remains of what the Spanish weather forecaster has named Storm Miguel, the Met Office said.

“It’s losing strength and moving slightly north, bringing those low pressure systems towards the UK,” Mr Miles added.

The weekend is likely to bring further changeable weather to Britain, with sunny spells interspersed with heavy rain.

Strong winds, potentially travelling at gale force speeds, will hit the UK’s southern coasts over the weekend.

The Met Office expects the winds to slow slightly by Sunday.

Weekend temperatures could be as warm as 21C in southern England, but may drop to 10C in northern England and Scotland.
