It was weeping and wailing in Lagos two days ago as four students who went to Elegushi Beach, Lekki, a Lagos uptown, to celebrate their outstanding successes in the West African School Certificate Examination (WASCE) got drowned in the process.
Though the entire students were 10 in number, six of them were lucky to be rescued before it was too late, says Elegushi Beach management.

The beach management which confirmed the incident in a statement, August 16, expressed sadness that the students had defied warnings to keep off a certain section of the beach known to be with sweeping tidal waves.
Speaking on behalf of the management, Ayuba Elegushi said the students did not take to the beach authority’s precautionary warnings, which led to the unfortunate situation.
“The beach authority and security team turned the students back, and the boys took a detour and went to an unmanned section of the beach area to swim,” he said, stressing, “unfortunately, about 10 of them were almost drowning before the beach security officers were alerted to the scene and six of them were rescued alive while four were already swept away.
“While the matter has been reported at the Ilasan Police Station, effort is still on to find the missing boys.”
Reconfirming the incident in a tweet, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, said the students had gone to the beach to celebrate after collecting their WAEC results, noting he had repeatedly warned parents and guardians to dissuade their wards against going to the beach to swim on account of its imminent danger./SHARE THIS
