As 2023 slowly glides closer, many stakeholders in the political arena, especially the youths, are beginning to have a rethink regarding their participation in the political development of the state. They are beginning to realize that like Caliban in the Shakespearean classic, The Tempest, they have embarked on a journey of self realization and can longer accept the ugly background foisted on them by the interpreters of their destiny. Slavery is not only until one is captured and sold to someone and subjected to hard labour and other forced services without reward. Slavery is also a situation where one continually goes against his own wish to please a master like Prospero. A slave can only be free when he finds his voice like Caliban did…
The Calibanisation of youths generally in the African political experience did not begin with the founding fathers of Nigerian nationalism because they were all young men and women ready then to serve their fatherland. The transmogrification of the youths to Calibans is actually a recent thing which, thankfully, is being handled already by them. If the economic situation in the country had earlier forced them to succumb to the biddings of their masters in the past, they have learnt a lot already, and just like Caliban, they no longer desire to remain as slaves, no matter the crumbs extended to them. Recall that Prospero taught Caliban speech…
Just like Caliban, the youths have over the years embarked on a journey of freedom by following the wrong directions. In anger , they had chosen to fight against the wrong enemies by indulging in cybercrimes, and other nefarious activities just to become like their masters. On other occasions, they had led protests demanding to be freed from the iron grips of economic strangulations which they have equally contributed to by deviating from regular and viable economic engagements. With the recent events in other climes and countries, the Nigerian youths are beginning to realize that political slavery which leads to economic slavery is a choice and that slavery has undergone innovations with nondescript outlets feasting on the ignorance of many.
Instead of becoming destructive and disruptive, they can channel that same energy towards the political arena and see how they can emancipate themselves from the ugly reality they have been forced to endure for a long time now. In Nigeria, and Benue State in particular, we are blessed with leaders who are law abiding and has so far allowed the youths to make choices. An enabling environment has also been provided for the youths of Benue to converge and chart a new political destiny for them. For many years, Caliban served Prospero but a time came when he, a half human, with gross limitations, decided to be free. GBE BENJAMIN ORDUEN is there to serve the purpose of a voice, an event and guide into the future.
History remains the unappreciated oracle of all times, with volumes of records containing the cyclical nature of events and man’s unavoidable entrapment to them. If the founding fathers of Nigeria were youths and they left a worthy legacy that is wobbling today as a result the misrule of the few, it is only proper for the youths to ponder on that and intensely desire to reenact what these great leaders of our country did by defying their Prosperos or colonial masters then and achieving political emancipation. Prospero has never appeared as one until it takes an event or events to unmask him. The same scenario has roared to the fore today and just like the youths of the 50s and 60s, a deliberate move is expected of them to free themselves and others.
When we rail against the ruling class and label them gerontocrats or the older generation, we do a lot of them a disservice. There were older men who cried and desired a change when the colonial masters held sway and ran things in this country. Today, many among the older generation are also not comfortable with certain events in the country and desire a change of baton favouring the youths. Synchronicity has also come to their aid by the emergence of a political ideology called GBEISM with the capacity to create the long awaited change in political leadership not only in Benue State but throughout the North Central and beyond.
Just like the youths of the 50s and 60s, the youths are not from another country or planet; they are equally Nigerians from the loins of the older generation with a mandate to create changes that would ultimately favour all. GBEISM provides the ideological thrust for this political enterprise , which is a project that encourages everyone, youths or not , to contribute his quota because nobody is averse to change or the good things of life properly earned or achieved in a system that is working and sustainable. It must be noted, however, that GBEISM is not against the older generation, it is an ideology that rather encourages the youths to get directly involved in the political affairs of the state for the purpose of change and a new lease of life for everyone, the elderly inclusive… GBEISM beckons. Answer the call today by becoming a GBENIST and expect change
