Senator Shettima calls for greater appreciation of Buhari’s role in securing the northeast

Former Governor of Borno state and Senator representing Borno Central Senatorial District,Senator Kashim Shettima  has called on the Senate to compel the Nigerian Defence Headquarters to speedily constitute a credible panel that should transparently generate facts on how 30 passengers lost their lives on Sunday night in Auno, Bormo State.

The Senator who spoke at the plenary on Thursday  warned against grandstanding by his colleagues which he said is the easiest to do  in this circumstance but called for a deeper appreciation of the efforts of the present government. ’’We should understand where we are coming from. Grandstanding is the easiest thing for me to do today, but I want to plead with my colleagues that we shouldn’t   follow that path. This same President Buhari secured the Northeast  from 2015 when the government came on board till the present day day when we have this little challenges. That should not be lost on us’’he cationed

The former governor reserved special praises for the Police, the Civil Defence  Corps  and the civilian JTF for their brilliant efforts in defending Maiduguri in the last few days. Shettima   complained about the closure of the city gate in Auno which forced the people to spend the night where they were attacked.’’Moreover, there was no single military personnel to engage the insurgent while no reinforcement came to help the people during the attack  despite the  closeness of Auno to the operational headquarters of Operation Lafiya Dole’

While the people of Auno were still mourning, the insurgents struck again  around 6 pm on Monday in Tungoshe in Kounduga LGA. The casualty figures are yet to be accertained. The next day, there was another attempted incursion into Maiduguri .The combined team of the Police, the Civil Defence Corps and the Civilian JTF were able to drive them back. This is not the time to play the blame game but  the time for us to come together to fight the scourge of terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other vices’’ he said
