Tim Sherwood, former captain of Blackburn Rovers, has revealed that a referee played a role in helping his team win the Premier League title ahead of Manchester United in 1995, Metro.co.uk reports.
Sir Alex Ferguson had guided United to the title in the first two Premier League seasons but Kenny Dalglish’s Blackburn were threatening to take their crown.
United appeared to be in the driving seat to win their third consecutive title as they just needed to beat West Ham on the final day of the season, while Blackburn had a tricky match away to Liverpool.
Rovers were beaten 2-1 at Anfield but United could only register a 1-1 draw against West Ham, which meant Dalglish’s side won the title by a single point.
However, Sherwood has revealed that one lenient referee had a major influence on Blackburn’s season.
In an interview with MailOnline, Sherwood admitted that in one game he should have been sent off for a deliberate handball before the referee went against the rules.
Sherwood revealed that he told the referee, who was reaching for his cards: ‘If you send me off, you’re going to shatter my dreams.’
Sherwood then claimed the referee moved his hand away from his pocket and said: ‘You owe me one.’
