The management of Queens College, Lagos has pleaded on behalf of the pupil who was prevented entry because she was wearing eyelashes.
Her mother created a scene at the school because her daughter was barred, an action which was widely condemned on the social media.
The school’s management appealed to those who have posted the videos and pictures of the incident on the social media to pull them down in the interest of the pupil, saying “ Uploading the video of the scene online is capable of destroying the girl forever.”
A statement from the management of the school says:
“The school and concerned people hereby appeal to Bloggers and influencers that have used the video and picture content of the minor (girl) on their various social media handles and platforms or news portal are enjoined to pull down the girl child and protect this minor as she remain a child, and it is our right to continue to protect the child rights.
“The Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, ETC) Act, 2015 prohibits the recording and subsequent distribution of injurious materials via a computer network.
“In as much as the school, the security, the parents and society may have all got it wrong. The Minor is the subject and must always be protected regardless and their are better ways to reconcile issues as such instead of washing the dirty linen in public.
“We all are protecting our ego while the confused girl who may not understand the discipline or value cries on the shoulder of the mother. Uploading the video of the scene online is capable of destroying the girl forever.
“It is an Information age, in their generation, viral video is everything, it can be used against her in school, university etc. it is one of the major reason why it was so wrong to subject her face to public condemnation.
“Many children of her age have committed suicide from embarrassments like this, we must all learn how to deal with the millennials, they are very different from our generation that was born with shock absorbbers from childhood.”
This was exactly my point when I saw the video. There are several ways of dealing with this issue without harrassment and public condemination. Thanks so much for this piece it really gives me a great relief.
