The President of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Ayuba Wabba has said that prudence
and accountability guarantee good governance and social security.
Wabba disclosed this at the public presentation of a book on Governor Ibrahim Gaidam at
Government House, Damaturu. He said that prudence should be key governance and accounting
principles contained in the book titled: “Governor Ibrahim Gaidam a Builder of Modern Yobe State.”
His words: “It gives me immense pleasure of delivering this lecture on the occasion of the
public presentation of a book and conferment of Thinkers Magazine’s ‘Outstanding Governor in Nigeria Award’ on Governor Gaidam.
“The award is in recognition of the unprecedented services and commitment to the wellbeing of people by the governor.
“Had today’s event been at behest of some state governors, I would have found hard to honour the invitation, let alone deliver this lecture.”
He said Gaidam is not only labour-friendly, but gives priority to workers’ salaries and pensioners welfare, despite the economic challenges.
He warned that failure to exercise prudent fiscal stewardship undermines democracy and good governance.
He said the failure to make wise choice will erode the ability of any entity control its fate.
Continuing, he added: “In every democracy, accountability is the oil that lubricates the wheels of democratic participation. It builds the critical nexus between public expectation and government actions.
“The example of Governor Gaidam should prod other state governors to think more creatively on how they can do a lot with little resources at their disposals.”
While reviewing the book, Prof. Danjuma Gambo of the University of Maiduguri has recommended Gaidam’s methodology and philosophy of leadership.
He told the governor-elect, Mai Mala Buni to seriously look at the 10 commandments of Gaidam’s leadership.
He also recommended the book to all Nigerians, including leaders, as some governors are apologizing for not paying workers’ salaries for 38 months, because of ongoing verifications.
He said during the 2019 general elections, some governors could not return, because they failed to pay workers’ salaries and pension.
He said Gaidam has not only filled the stomachs of people, but built infrastructural facilities and the reformation of civil service.
Buni, in his brief remarks, assured the people that they will follow the footsteps of the founder of modern Yobe state, including the legacies of good governance and service deliveries.
According to him, the welfare programmes of Gaidam will be protected and promoted to ensure continuity and consolidation.
