New IGP Mohammed Adamu Dissolves FSARS

January 21, 2019
The new Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu has directed immediate dissolution of the Federal Special Anti-robbery Robbery Squad (FSARS), Special Investigation Panel (SIP) and Special Tactical Squad (STS).

The directive was disclosed Monday during his inaugural conference with Commissioners of Police and other senior officers in Abuja.

By this disbandment, FSARS will now be under the direct supervision of the commissioners of police in 36 states of the federation.

Adamu was sworn in Tuesday, January 15 after the retirement of former IGP, Ibrahim Idris.

His directive to dissolve the FSARS is arguably connected to the highhandedness that characterized the operations of its operatives for a long time.

One of such is the killing of an officer of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, Rotimi Adeyemi by a FSARS officer identified as Olukunle Olonade at Iyana-Ipaja axis, Wednesday, November 30, ’18 .

Adeyemi had reportedly stopped the FSARS officer during a routine stop and search operation during which the Olonade drew his weapon and gunned down the LASTMA  officer who died immediately.

Adeyemi was soon lynched by angry residents. He died the following day.
