In a bid to avert flooding tragedy that may occur as a result of unawareness, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has embarked on sensitization campaign to flood prone areas and riverine communities in Adamawa State, enlightening the citizens on precautioary measures to adopt in anticipation of the impending doom. One of such measures was the imperative to relocate to safer places in the mean time, following earlier predictions by the Nigerian Meteoroligical Agency (NEMA) and other relevant agencies that Adamawa State, among other states, would likely experience excessive flooding this year.
The area visited by the agency include: Lamurde, Numan, Demsa, Yola South, Yola North and Guyuk Local Government Areas already classified as high and low risk areas.
Speaking during the visit to Lamurde, NEMA Head of Operations in the state, Midala Iliya Anuhu, told the council chairman their visit was to sensitize the area on the impending flooding doom earlier predicted by NIMET, NIHSA and other relevant agencies, with a view to putting them on alert, stressing that the local government was, particularly, classified as high risk area, hence the need for dwellers to regularly monitor the volumes of water in their areas as rainy season intensifies. He solicited the local area’s support on the need to step up the awareness to various communities in the area.
Responding, the Executive Chairman of Lamurde LGA, Hon. Burta Williams, applauded the agency for its usual interventions, especially the provision of palliatives to varying victims of disasters, assuring the agency of his commitment to working closely with it for the benefit of all.
High point of the sensitization was the team’s distribution of flyers that illustrate measures to take to avert the impending calamity.
Receiving the team at Demsa ouncil area, its chairman, represented by his secretary, Mr. Hilary Philemon, lamented of the yearly flooding tragedy in all the 10 electoral wards in the area, except three, a situation that has seasonally given them sleepless nights.
