On behalf of the teeming population of Muslims and other well-meaning people of South Western Nigeria, we wish to use this medium to dissociate ourselves from the discordant statement reportedly made by some self-appointed individuals who purport to speak on behalf of all the Yoruba against the outcome of the elections.”
MUSWEN’S PRESS RELEASE ON THE RE-ELECTION OF PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI
Ibadan; Friday, 1st March, 2019
MUSWEN CONGRATULATES PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI
The Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN), on behalf of all Muslims in the South West region of Nigeria, congratulates President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, on his victory at the last presidential election. We equally congratulate the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, GCON, and other elected political leaders across the country for securing the trust and mandate of their respective people to provide good governance for the nation.
We believe that President Buhari’s victory is a demonstration of the fact that Nigerians appreciate his sincere and unwavering commitment to combating corruption, growing the economy and securing the nation. The renewed mandate, no doubt, provides an opportunity for the President to consolidate on the gains of the past four years. We beseech Allah to grant the President and other leaders greater wisdom and courage with which to lead Nigeria to greater heights in the next four years.
We commend the electorate, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, political parties, the candidates and other stakeholders for making the conduct of the presidential and national assembly elections a huge success. We are gratified by the fact that, save for a few isolated cases of violence and disruption of the election, the overwhelming majority of the Nigerian electorate were able to cast their votes peacefully. For this, we give thanks to Allah. It is our hope and prayer that INEC and other critical stakeholders will work hard to ensure that the upcoming gubernatorial and state assembly elections hold under a more peaceful atmosphere.
On behalf of the teeming population of Muslims and other well-meaning people of South Western Nigeria, we wish to use this medium to dissociate ourselves from the discordant statement reportedly made by some self-appointed individuals who purport to speak on behalf of all the Yoruba against the outcome of the elections. We advise them not to throw the region into chaos. It has become clear over the years that these elements have consistently pursued only their narrow selfish interests. The Muslim Community in the region shall continue to stand for the good of all Nigerians. We remain committed to peace and peaceful coexistence among all the people of Nigeria.
Lastly, MUSWEN appeals to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, GCON, the runner-up in the presidential election to, as a Muslim and in the interest of peace, accept the outcome of the election without precondition and congratulate the winner, President Muhammadu Buhari. This, we believe, will help in healing whatever wound that could have been occasioned by the contest. We pray Allah to grant him the wisdom of seeing the outcome of the election in the light of the divine declaration: *_”it may well be that you hate a thing while it is good for you; and it may well be that you love a thing whereas it is bad for you – Allah knows but you do not know.”_* (Qur’an 2:216)
