Kafayat Omoshalewa Amusan, who delivered a baby boy on the Emirate Airline evacuating 256 Nigerians from Dubai has spoken about her ordeal.
In an interview with Vanguard, the Nigerian said that she gave birth before flight attendants could get to her, adding that she had wanted to come to deliver her third baby but her flight was earlier cancelled.
The Ibeju Lekki indigene, a banking and finance graduate, who left the country seven years ago, said her labour was a forced one because she has had to face much stress in recent days.
“I delivered by myself inside the plane even before the flight attendant could get to me. It was a miraculous act that is beyond my imagination.
“My actual due date was May 30 and my husband and I had agreed for me to come home to deliver. I had resigned my appointment two months earlier and had actually bought a ticket preparatory to return to Nigeria before the lockdown with the grounding of flights worldwide,” she said.
She said they had been hoping for an opportunity to come to Nigeria when they came across a Facebook post asking Nigerians in UAE to register for a possible evacuation.
“So, I have to resign from my place of work and it was during the process of my documentation that the issue of Covid-19 started and all airlines were stopped from an operation.
“Immediately I saw the advert that Nigeria embassy will repatriate on Facebook, I quickly filled the form and I was listed among those that will be repatriated,” she added.
Kafayat also said while she was going through labour pains, she was amidst people who were at a loss of what to do in such case.
The 32-year-old mother called on the Nigerian community to help her, saying that she needs to process the birth documents of her baby and other important things that needed to be done.
