How depressed GLO accountant, 47, took own life over prolonged spinsterhood, childlessness



A severely depressed Senior Accountant with Globacom, Miss Afolake Abiola, 47, has taken her own life in her residence located at Lekki, Lagos after gulping a bottle of Sniper insecticide over prolonged spinsterhood and childlessness.


Afolake Abiola had over 19 years of experience working with the popular telecommunications company, Globacom, as an accountant, rising through the ranks since joining the company in 2003.

It was gathered that due to presumed loneliness resulting from the lack of a husband and a child throughout her lifetime, she committed suicide by drinking Sniper, a popular pesticide.

The incident which occurred on Friday , May 27, 2022, at her residence, at 1, Abayomi Kukomi, Close, in Osapa London, Lekki, Lagos, left equally eligible bachelors wailing in disbelief, and asking: why now, Aunty Folake; but we’re equally available!

Her family member, who volunteered statement, said, “Afolake had been battling depression for a while on account of no husband and no child to call her own; but we didn’t know it had got to this level up to ending her own life.”

A colleague of hers who spoke on condition of anonymity, expressed sadness over the incident, blaming the devil for the incident, since, according to her, Afolake had not lacked man-woman relationship and was even the one calling off the union at shortest possible times.

“She had been suffering from severe depression for years and her death has nothing to do with not having adequate s*x or something like that. Within the last five years, I know she had been in relationships that didn’t work out and was the one who, on her own, ended them. She said she will never again, bring someone into her life when she could not even take care of her own self. For her, there are men everywhere quite alright, but not all are husbands.”

Confirming the incident, Lagos State Police Spokesman, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the death occurred on Friday, May 27, 2022, adding, “when the police got to the scene, her family members were already there and officially requested that her corpse be released to them for proper burial in line Islamic rites.

“The moment the police in that area were alerted, they arrived and met the woman lying lifeless on the floor, and a bottle of insecticide was also found by her side, apparently, she had ingested the insecticide,” Hundeyin volunteered.
