The Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Human Rights, Professor Mojeed Alabi, decried the growing menace of human trafficking between the African continent and Europe and urge the governments on the two continents to increase the level of collaboration to stem the tide.

Prof Alabi, who is also one of the Champions of the Nigeria-CPA UK anti-modern slavery group  spoke in Abuja at the SHOWCASE OF THE OUTCOMES OF THE ASSISTANCE BY INTERNATIONAL CENTRE FOR MIGRATION POLICY DEVELOPMENT (ICMPD) TO THE NATIONAL AGENCY FOR THE PROHIBITION OF TRAFFICKING IN PERSONS (NAPTIP)UNDER THE DEMAND DRIVEN PROJECT (DDP)OF THE EUROPEAN UNION (EU) AND ECOWAS.

He commended the NAPTIP and its DG as well as the development partners comprising the EU and the ECOWAS for the initiative of producing training manual that could guide teachers and students in the primary and secondary schools in Nigeria to identify and properly report incidents of modern slavery, inhuman treatment and human trafficking.

Prof Alabi was particularly elated to learn that Nigeria’s neighbour, Niger Republic, had its own equivalent of the NAPTIP and had the DG of the institution in attendance.

He opined that the fight against forced labour and human trafficking in Nigeria cannot be expected to witness any appreciable progress if our Northern neighbours, which served as the route of trafficking, were not carried along.

He was therefore elated that Niger Republic and other neighbouring countries as well as representatives of the diplomatic corps were visibly in attendance.

Professor Alabi participated in the public presentation of the manuals and took group photographs before departing for the NASS for the legislative session of the day.
