Great Ife Alumni Mourns Afuye, Speaker, Ekiti Assembly

The Alumni Association of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, has described the sudden death of Mr. Funminiyi Afuye, speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, as a great loss.

Afuye died Wednesday evening at the Ekiti State Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti, where he was receiving treatment after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Great Ife Alumni Association, in a release said:

“We just lost a Great! A formidable member of Great Ife Alumni Association, Ekiti Branch, Rt. Hon. Funminiyi Afuye, speaker, Ekiti State House of Assembly.

“Until his death, Rt. Hon. Funminiyi Afuye held Great Ife alumni association so dear to his heart. A committed member of Ekiti Branch of the association. The branch will miss him so much and the entire Global Executive Council will miss him.

“The Global Executive Council of Great Ife Alumni Association under the leadership of Engr. Wale Olaleye, FNSE, commiserates with the family, friends and associates he left behind.

“We shared in the grief of the Branch in Ekiti at this trying period and pray God Almighty to put a permanent stop to untimely death in our midst.

“May God grant the departed eternal rest.”

The late Afuye, 66, was a former Commissioner, Ekiti State Ministry of Information and a two-time member of the State Assembly. He was inaugurated Speaker of the sixth Assembly on June 6, 2019.

Afuye was at the thanksgiving service of the new governor, Biodun Oyebanji, on Tuesday October 18 and later chaired the plenary session of the Assembly in the afternoon.
