FG flags off Water Supply project in Gombe

The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, has flagged-off the rehabilitation, expansion and upgrading of the already existing Gombe Regional Water Supply Scheme for the provision of portable water supply under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) agreement which was signed between the Federal Government and Gombe State Government on 12th August, 2021.

The Honourable Minister of Water Resources, Engr Suleiman H. Adamu FNSE, FAeng, together with the Executive Governor of Gombe State, Alhaji Innuwa Yahaya, performed the flag-off ceremony at TunfureGombe metropolis, Gombe State on Friday, 6th January, 2023.

Engr. Adamu said the Water Supply Scheme is co-funded by the Federal Government through the Ministry of Water Resources and Gombe State Government in accordance with the provision of the National Water Supply Scheme and Sanitation Policy, stressing that this policy was approved by Federal Executive Council and ratified by National Council of States in January

 2000.

The Minister, while giving the breakdown of the total financial cost of the project based on the MoU agreement as; FG –  N3, 447, 362, 801.98 ( 30 percent);  Gombe State Government – N8, 043,846,537.97 (70 percent) and additional N419, 163, 985.79 for Consultancy Services, urged the State Government to give utmost priority for the implementation of this project in realizing the objective of providing sustainable water supply to the people of Gombe State.

In his remark, the Executive Governor, Alhaji Innuwa Yahaya, said his Government has prioritized the provision of Water Supply in the State, noting that the historic flag-off of the rehabilitation, expansion and upgrading of the existing Regional Water Supply Scheme marked the commencement of the project and fully committed to completing it and delivering same on schedule to the people of Gombe State.

Earlier in his welcome address, Gombe State Honourable Commissioner of Water Resources, Hon. Mijinyawa Yahaya, said the rapid growth and increase in population, as well as influx of internally displaced persons into Gombe State from neighbouring states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa due to insurgency, led to the growing demand for Water Supply.

To tackle this water problem, the Executive Governor of Gombe State, Innuwa Yahaya, therefore, conceived and prioritized this initiative of providing the laudable project to the people of Gombe metropolis and environs.

In his goodwill message, His Royal Highness, the Emir of Gombe, Alhaji (DR)

Abubakar Shehu Abubakar, III, thanked the Federal and State Governments as well as the Honourable Minister of Water Resources for the timely provision of this laudable project.

He appealed to his subjects to protect the infrastructure to avoid its destruction.
