The Director General of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mustapha Habib Amed, has warned of even more devastating flooding next year, 2023, alarming relevant arms of federal, state and local governments to take precautionary measures to avert the trend.

Ahmed who raised the alarm when he appeared before the Senate Committee on Special Duties, Monday, to defend his agency’s 2023 budget, lamented that early warnings such as this, given to the states in 2022 by the agency were ignored, prompting the massive destruction by flooding in the affected areas.
Ahmed said: “Let me also use this opportunity to prevail on the committee to intervene on our behalf. We have written to states several times. The flood is still coming in 2023.
“They must be advised early to set up State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs) and local emergency committees and fund them adequately.
“They must not wait until it happens to begin a fire brigade approach that will not be of interest to anyone,” Ahmed warned./SHARE THIS
