The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arrested former Governor Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara State in connection with the N80billion fraud allegation against the suspended Accountant-General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris.
The former governor was nabbed yesterday at his residence in Abuja, a few days after he won the primary election for Zamfara West Senatorial District on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
The suspended Accountant General of the Federation, AGF, has been in the EFCC custody since May 16 facing investigators over allegations of corruption to the tune of N80 billion.
Investigators are working with the lead that he allegedly conspired with others to steal public funds which, by his role, he was meant to safeguard.
Yari was said to have had suspicious transaction of about N20billion with Ahmed Idris. This was related to the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P).
Also, EFCC officials arrested Anthony Yaro, the Chairman and Managing Director of Finex Professional, a company through which the N20billion was siphoned.
A N20 billion “SURE-P refund” was said to have been set up by the suspended Accountant-General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris, to move money to Yari.
Idris was arrested by the anti-graft agency on May 16 in connection with the diversion of funds and money laundering activities to the tune of N80 billion.
He was later suspended indefinitely by the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed via a letter dated May 18, 2022 to allow for “proper and unhindered investigation” in line with public service rules.
