Coronavirus death toll passes 50,000 as number of cases approaches 1,000,000

More than 50,000 people have lost their lives to coronavirus across the world, METRO reports.
The total number of diagnoses is close to 1 million and around half of the global population is under some form of lock down.
Italy has borne the brunt of fatalities with 13,915 people losing their lives since the pandemic began in December.
In Spain 10,003 patients have succumbed to Covid-19 followed by 4,032 in France, according to real-time data from Johns Hopkins University Baltimore, Maryland, USA.
Researchers say 33,718 people have been infected with coronavirus in the UK, where 2,921 patients have been killed. While European countries are suffering devastating losses, the US has become the new epicentre of infections with 217,263 cases and more than 5,000 deaths.
The virus is thought to have originated from a live animal market in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. More than 82,000 cases have been confirmed in the People’s Republic, but doubt has been cast over the legitimacy of the figures.
A confidential White House intelligence report is thought to have accused Chinese authorities of lying about their numbers and under-reporting cases in order to play down the country’s outbreak.
Covid-19 has now impacted 183 countries, throwing the global economy into turmoil as businesses have been forced to close down and people have been told to stay at home. Emergency lock downs are being enforced in a number of countries. Sweeping measures in India meant 1.3 billion people were confined to their homes, only being allowed out for essential purposes.
