Former Secretary of the Defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in Borno state, and Adviser to former Governor Kashim Shettima, Hon. Yusuf Adamu has commended governor of the state, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum and his Deputy, Alhaji Usman Umar Kadafur for reintroduction of environmental sanitation across the state.
Adamu, now a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) said this would definitely protect the well being of the populace and provide healthier environment for not only the people, but with their animals, as the exercise would actively curb water borne diseases and other environmental hazards in the society.
The APC Chieftain stated this on Saturday, marking the Flagg Off of ‘Operations Keep Our Surroundings Clean’ in Maidiguri, the state capital.
While commending Professor Zulum and his Deputy, Usman Umar Kadafur and the Commissioner for Environment, Engineer Kabir Wanori, however called on the relevant security agencies and the people in the state to key in, and cooperate fully for the benefit of the society.
He said, the call became necessary due to the importance of environmental sanitation to the health, social, economic and moral well-being of the people.
He noted that the decade long neglect of environmental sanitation by all and sundry has led to the blockages of drainages and unwarranted waste disposals which had caused severe human damages, especially contaminations of preventable diseases such as malaria, cholera among other deadly diseases and natural disasters especially flooding.
Adamu lauded the large turn-out of people, especially political office holders, traditional rulers and religious leaders who participated actively in the exercise being carried out at the House, urging other stakeholders to emulate the idea for health benefits.
His words: “I want to use this medium to commend governor of the state, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum and his Deputy, Alhaji Usman Umar Kadafur for reintroduction of environmental sanitation across the state.
“This initiatives was long overdue for decades, it was encouraging and could reduce the risk of diseases and unnecessary wastage of money on treatment.
” I am also happy with the turnout and the full cooperation of people for the sanitation, because, as you can see our environment now is clean and its health benefits were immeasurable.
“I would like to call on the attention of the government, other relevant agencies in the state for a joint enlightenment campaign, to sensitize the public on the dangers of filthy environment and problems associated with it”, he said.
