Boko Haram attacks Gov Shettima ‘s convoy, Six Dead, Including Soldier, , Scores missing with gunshot wounds

Boko Haram insurgents have attacked the convoy of Kashim Shettima, Governor of Borno State, leaving six persons dead including a Member of Honourable Usman Zannah Campaign Forum (HUZAF), Mallam Baggidos Usmanu and a soldier, while scores mostly women were abducted.

Usman Zannah is candidate for House of Representatives, Magumeri, Gubio and Kaga Federal Constituency on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the February 16th General elections.

Some members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) who were in the convoy, and returned back to Maiduguri at about 6:25pm on Wednesday confirmed the deadly ambush on the Governor’s Convoy.

Although, they declined mentioning their names as they were not authorized to talk to the press, they said the incident took place on Tuesday evening between Gajibo Village and Gamboru Ngala Local Government Area, a border community with Cameron Republic, where they Governor and the Gubernatorial Candidate of the APC, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum among other candidates and party supporters had gone to campaign.

The CJTF Sources said, “We were involved in boko haram ambush when we were escorting the governor to Ngala yesterday evening.

” Unfortunately or initially two people were killed instantly, but other corpses were recovered in the area of the attack while we were returning back after the campaign/rally.

“Also a soldier name withheld who fought gallantry to repelled the attack was shot in his head and he died.

” Many people suspected to be supporters of the APC including women and youths were abducted or still missing. The attackers also went away with one of our Hilux operation vehicle of Sector 9 during the attack”

The Governor is also a senatorial candidate where Gamboru Ngala is part of his senatorial district. The town is about 160km drive from Maiduguri, the state capital and a stone-throw to Kala Balge where quite a number of humanitarian workers, security operatives and civilians were killed and abducted by series of boko haram attacks.

According the sources, the incident happened when some group of armed Boko Haram sect in three gun truck vehicles mounted with Anti Aircraft Guns (AA) and motorcycles laid ambush on the convoy at about 6pm that illfated day, where the insurgents succeeded in dividing the governor’s long convoy into two and raining gunshots on the one behind.

A source who simply gave his name as Abdullahi Adam Yau, and claimed to be among the lucky survivors told our Correspondent that, he has all to thank God for sparing his time in the ambush, as their vehicle was next to the one which Usmanu (now deceased) was trapped and cut into pieces including the vehicle as a result of the firepower from the terrorists.

Honourable Usman Zannah in a telephone call to our Regional Reporter, North East confirmed the death of one of his supporter and member of HUZAF, Late Baggidos Usmanu who hails from Askira Uba Local Government Area of the state.

Zannah described the deceased as very humble and trustworthy individual that would be missed by his campaign Forum, and prayed God to grant eternal Rest to the souls of those who died in the ambush, even as he condole with the families of the victims.

At the time of going to Press, governor Shettima’s convoy it was learnt is closely approaching Maiduguri from Gamboru Ngala.
