Bloody Tuesday at National Assembly as Shiites clash with security agents

A protest on Tuesday by members of the Shiite group, otherwise known as members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, turned violent at the National Assembly as they engaged security operatives in a bloody confrontation.

The Shiites who were protesting the continued incerceration of their leader, Sheikh Ibrahim Elzakzaky, stormed the National Assembly complex, smashing vehicles and shooting at the security operatives manning the gate.

A policeman and a personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were wounded in the process.

The incident led to the closure of all gates to the National Assembly premises and the operatives firing back.

Some Shiites also sustained gunshots in the confrontation.
