  • President Buhari with L-R: AFDB Special Adviser on Industrialization Prof. Oyebanji Oyeyinka, AFDB President Dr Akinwunmi Adesina, Foreign Affairs Minister Geoffrey Onyeama, Chief of Staff Prof. Ibrahim Gambari and Minister of Finance Zainab Ahmed as he receives in audience President of African Development Bank in State House on 2nd June 2020.

President at the meeting alongside the duo were the Chief of Staff to the President, Prof Ibrahim Agboola Gambari; Minister of Finance, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed; Foreign Affairs Minister Geoffrey Onyeama and AfDB Special Adviser on Industrialization Prof. Oyebanji Oyeyinka.

Dr. Adesina, Nigeria’s former Minister of Agriculture under ex President Goodluck Jonathan was on May 8, 2015, elected President of the AfDB.

He is the first Nigerian to hold that office. Adesina is jostling for a second term, but the bid is being strongly opposed by the United States which is calling for a re-opening a probe he had originally been cleared of.

President Buhari’s administration and some former African presidents, including Chief Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria have however openly rebuffed the U.S. and have given Adesina a clean bill of health.

Although Nigeria is the largest shareholder of the bank, he voting power on the Board is split according to the size of each member’s share. This is currently 60%-40% between African (or “regional”) countries and “non-regional” member countries (“donors”)-U.S. inclusive. Nigeria’s voting strength is nearly 9 percent.
