Academic Excellence: FUOYE Geophysics Defeats Over 20 Tertiary Institutions To Clinch Victory At NMGS Contest; gets valuable geophysics tool as part of rewards

Two undergraduates of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti, FUOYE, Aborisade Victor and Bamidele Blessing Opemipo, have again brought honour to the University by winning the 2023 edition of the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS) student quiz competition organized by the Ibadan regional chapter of the society recently.

The two students are of Geophysics Department of FUOYE. While handsome Aborisade Victor is in 400 level, the charming Bamidele Blessing Opemipo, is a 300 Level student of the Department.

The duo joined the FUOYE hall of fame, honour and grace when they came first as FUOYE’s team in the quiz contest thereby showcasing the Ivory Tower as having the best students in geoscience in the chapter.

The Head of Department of Geophysics, FUOYE, Dr. A.B Eluwole, was excited as he broke the good news to the University media team, saying: “I am pleased to inform you that the Department of Geophysics came first in the quiz competition organized by the regional chapter of the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS). The quiz competition involved over twenty higher institutions offering geoscience courses. The names of the students that represented us are: Aborisade Victor and Bamidele Opemipo. They were led to the competition by Mr. T.S. Fagbemigun. It will be recalled that the Department of Geophysics came second in the same contest last year. Apart from personal gifts/prizes and sponsorship to attend the next NMGS conference scheduled to hold in Jos awarded the students, the Department also got a unit of modern Global Positioning System (GPS).

“The Department is grateful to God for the grace of excellence. We are indeed grateful to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina, for his trust in the Department and prompt approval of all field-related matters which are core to our courses.

Sincerely, the feat wouldn’t have been possible without the good quality of instructions from both Geophysics and Geology lecturers and in fact all lecturers who have imparted the students in the Faculty of Science. Also speaking about their admirable feat at the competition, the two academic wizards told the University’s media team that they were happy to have brought honour to the institution, saying it was a way of appreciating the University for having imparted so much on them academically.

Blessing said: “I was overwhelmed with joy when we were being announced as the winner for this year’s NMGS Quiz Competition. I wanted to cry because I know my parents would be so proud of me and I bless God for the success because He made us worthy amongst the multitude.

“It was a great honour to represent my department and school. I never thought I would be given such an opportunity. Thank you FUOYE, Thank you Geophysics.”

Beaming with smiles, Victor also said: “I’m grateful to God for the grace he gave to me and my co-contestant to represent the department of geophysics in the just concluded NMGS inter-institution quiz. We didn’t win the competition by our power but by the Favour of GOD. I’m grateful for my lecturers and the staff of the department as a whole for the part they all played in the success. This win is for the Department of Geophysics, FUOYE and for the University as a whole.”
