At least, seven persons were reported to have been arrested barely 24 hours after some dare-devil bandits invaded the Ikeja-Lagos home of the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 Presidential Election, Chief MKO Abiola.

The armed gang were said to have invaded the late politician’s home, off Toyin Street, Ikeja, Lagos, and carted away huge sums of cash and other valuables, including jewelries, apart from subjecting the late philanthropist’s household to a great deal of emotional trauma, in the early hours of Wednesday, September, 2, 2020.

The robbers were said to have scaled through his fence into the premises when his wives and two daughters were fast asleep, catching the security guards and domestic staff unaware. They were said to have left the same way they came, with neither the guards nor domestic staff raising the alarm until several hours later. This prompted the police to see them as prime suspects. Police worked on a theory of insider conspiracy and picked some of them, alongside some other outsiders implicated.

A statement by the family signed by Tundun Abiola, said the robbers ransacked the home, stole cash and other valuables, adding that the police have been notified and and is currently investigating.

Lagos Police Commissioner, Hakeem Odumosu, confirmed the incident, saying that some suspects were, indeed, in custody.

He said: “Yes, robbers went there and carted away unspecified amounts of jewelries and some money. I was there personally and I spoke with Mama. There was no physical assault on her or the two daughters who were home.

“I know that some suspects are in custody but I have not been fully briefed on the number of people arrested. Some of the domestic staff were also arrested.

“The security on the ground did not alert the police or any security agency when the incident was going on. They said they noticed unusual movement within the compound at the time but did not inform us. The police were only told several hours after the robbery, prompting us to work on a theory insider conspiracy. I’ll brief you more as events unfold.”
