Democracy Day: felicitation to Nigerians
- Engr. Bashir Lawal
PREAMBLE
Oodua National Integration Network (ONIN) is a Yoruba socio cultural group with a vision in the Integration of Yorubas-the second largest ethnic group- to the main Stream affairs of the federal Republic of Nigeria without compromising Yoruba identity for the betterment of the Nation.
Oodua National Integration Network (ONIN) felicitates with all Nigerians today 12th June 2020 marking the 21st Anniversary of uninterrupted Democratic rule in Nigeria and the first of its kind to take place on 12th June , a date all Nigerians will never forget ushering democracy via a successful but nullified electoral process that took place on 12th June 1993. Even though, the annulment of the 1993 election later polarised and destabilised the entity called Nigeria, the 1999 elections and subsequent elections have ushered in democracy and stabilised the polity. The founding fathers of our democracy are congratulated for laying the foundation on which politicians are building on.
These are germane issues as per our celebration of Democracy Day today:
- Appreciation to President Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, for deeming it fit to have rewritten the history of democracy in Nigeria not only in ensuring that Democracy day is celebrated in Nigeria, but assigned the date a free and fair election was conducted but annulled, i.e. June 12 .
- That despite heated polity brought by the Annulment of June 12, 1993 election, Nigeria survived going to war or secession, Oodua National Integration Network is calling all Nigerians to embrace National Unity and eschew all divisive tendencies that can jeopardise the oneness of the country.
- The role that Yoruba Nation played in the June 12, 1993 elections could not be overemphasised and its doggedness to ensuring that the election was upheld. The Oodua National Integration Network salutes the courage of those that defended Chief M.K.O Abiola mandate with their sweat and blood.
- The Yoruba leaders are enjoined to synergise with all other leaders of Nations that made Nigeria as an entity. A need for dialogues, understanding and strategising towards the progress of Nigeria is highly desirable.
- Oodua National Integration Network condemns in its entirety the call by some few Yorubas that are calling for secession or disintegration of the country as echoed by some tribes ,there is strength in numbers, our forefathers made a lot of sacrifice and even supported the Civil War in order to have One Nigeria .
- We call on the Federal Government of Nigeria to intensifying its efforts in fighting insurgencies and ensuring safety of the citizens from banditry attack and kidnapping.
- We call on the Federal Government to be interested in post-COVID 19 economic recovery for her citizenry.
- Wishing all Nigerians Happy Democracy Day.
Long Live Nigeria, Long Live Oodua National Integration Network.
Signed
