Rep Yusuf Yakub (APC-Adamawa), on Wednesday, said he would “want to see a people’s friendly legislature that opens its doors to the masses in the 9th National Assembly.’’
Yakub, who represents Gombi/Homg Federal Constituency, stated this in an interview with journalists in Abuja.
Speaking on what he intends to do differently if elected as speaker, House of Representatives, the lawmaker said he would “open up the legislature to the common man on the streets so that he can ventilate himself and freely contributes to law making.’’
‘’I want to see a legislature that is people’s friendly where the common man can walk to the legislature and propose areas where they want the laws to be amended.
“Because these laws are meant for Nigerians; not just for the rich but also for the poor and if opportunities are not given to the poor to also be part of law making, we will always have a one-sided law that will favour just the rich.’’
He said he would create atmosphere of harmony between the legislature and executive that would help to speedy legislative work on appropriation bills.
“One of the reasons we have our budget delayed is still lack of harmony between the two arms of government.
“Where the minister or head of an agency will bring the budget proposal on time and the legislators will also work on it on time and there will be no disagreement between the two arms to cause unnecessary delay, I think that will be good for Nigerians.
‘’So I will make sure on the areas of appropriation, we get the job done on time so that monies will be released for various developmental activities in the country,’’ he said.
Yakub also said that he would promote harmonious relationship among members of the House “where the different divides in terms of zone, state, tribe or religion is not considered for getting the job done.’’
“We will work as Nigerians and promote the identity of oneness, not as Hausa man, Yoruba man or Ibo man.
“I will bury that ideology of seeing people from where they come from so that the world will see us as Nigerians.
“This will help enhance the speed we do our job for the betterment of the country. These are areas I will work on,’’ he said.
