Emefiele was first appointed in 2014 by former President Goodluck Jonathan and retained by the new administration of President Buhari in 2015.
Last month, George Uboh, head of George Uboh Whistleblowers Network (GUWN), had written to the CBN governor and asked him to explain how over $2.5billion got missing from the nation’s treasury. In the letter dated April 3, 2019, with reference number GUWN/CBNEMEFIELE/030419/01, and captioned: “REQUEST TO REMIT OVER $2,564,000,000 FEDERAL GOVERNMENT FUNDS MISSING UNDER YOUR WATCH TO TSA,” the whistleblower had alleged that the “CBN under-declared and under-remitted $760million exchange gains which accrued from BDCs to Federation account through Lagos, Kano, Abuja and Awka” and also conspired with NNPC to divert $24,263,008.56 in 2015 expected to be shared through FAAC in January 2016 to the three tiers of government.”
