President of Mali, Col. Assimi Goïta has announced that the three countries of Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso have formed a new military alliance through the signing of the Liptako-Gourma Charter.
The alliance instituted collective defense and mutual assistance among the member states.
Liptako-Gourma is a Sahelian geographical sub-region split between the three countries.
The signing of this charter marks a historic day for the Sahel.
