Attempt to amend the House standing rule by members of Jigawa state House of Assembly caused a major fracas onTuesday.
Trouble started when the speaker of the House Mr. Isa Idris, announced the decision to amend the house standing rule that stipulates that all former assembly speakers and deputy speakers that were once impeached cannot vie for the position of speaker in subsequent assemblies.
The proposed amended rule will also disqualify any principal officer that was suspended or impeached to re- contest for the position of speakership.
The decision faced stiff resistance from some members alledgedly working to unseat the current speaker.
The members believed be nursing the desire to return a former speaker Idris Jahun, that was impeached three years ago kicked against it.
The member representing Yankwashi constituency in the State House of Assembly Abdulrahman Alkassim led those opposing the proposed amendment and was supported by a vast majority of the members.
The opposing members also challenged by other members that wanted the amendment .
Our findings showed that there has been an underground movement by some members to impeach the present speaker Isa Idris and replace him with the impeached former speaker Idris Jahun
The crisis resulted to exchange of vulgar words by members which resulted to a fist to cuff fight that later led to the destruction of the assembly mace into three parts.
