The Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has challenged President Muhammadu Buhari to account for the $1bn security funds jointly contributed by the 36 states as their own dogged determination to fighting insecurity in the whole states of the federation.
Making the challenge, Tuesday, at the Government House, Makurdi, prior to the State Security Council meeting, the governor expressed dismay that such a huge sum of money was at the disposal of the Buhari’sFederal Government while he sits idle and watch insurgency ravaging the states of the federation.
Ortom who confirmed the money was contributed by the 36 states Governors Forum, hinted of his earlier directive to his deputy, Benson Abounu, to ask for answers on the situation, noting that his challenge became inevitable since the Buhari government refused to answer the question.
Expressing this in an official statement, Ortom questions again: “What have they done with the $1,000,000,000 the Governors Forum gave on behalf of the local governments for security?
“That money is huge enough to warrant an immediate answer against the backdrop of the insecurity ravaging the states of the federation at the moment, with terrorists kidnapping the citizens at random, without any rescue mission?
“It is even worrisome and unthinkable that terrorists will threaten to kidnap our President. If that happens, it means we have no country anymore,” he lamented, adding that “the primary responsibility of any responsive government remains to ensure the safety of lives and property.
“The situation where innocent Nigerians are left at the mercy of vicious terrorists is unacceptable, and we must not allow it to continue,” he further bemoaned, saying, “a situation where Nigeria as the giant of Africa, had become helpless to tackle its security challenges is very painful.”
…As Senators threaten to impeach him over insecurity
This is coming as Nigerian Senators have threatened to impeach him (President Muhammadu Buhari) over the country’s worsening security, against the backdrop of his government appearing helpless in tackling the situation.
At the commencement of plenary on Tuesday, July 26, 2022, the lawmakers questioned Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, on why the issue of insecurity was not in the Order Paper.
The outraged lawmakers expressed disgust that the terrorists even threatened to kill President Buhari, Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai, and other top Nigerian politicians, after their general killing spree./SHARE THIS
