By Joe Adedeji, Ilorin
A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) student of the University of Ilorin, Maryam Abiola Ahmed, has discovered ‎a kind of herb capable of healing diarrhea.
Maryam of the Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Life Sciences of the University came out with an invention that African Custard apple, scientifically known as Annona Senegalensis, could be used in the treatment of diarrhea.
This, according to the scholar, can be achieved when the root and the stem of the plant are mixed together.
She made this disclosure while defending her PhD thesis at the Faculty of Science Board Room, University of Ilorin.
According to her, the herb could be used for treatments, especially for those who could not afford the orthodox medications.
She recommended that various fractions of the plant should be purified and the specific mechanism of action of each of the components as well as the toxicological evaluation should be carried out so that the herb could be developed and used for the treatment of diarrhea.
