By Baba Mohammed

A 13-member contingent, comprising of nine taekwondo athletes and four coaches hit Morocco airport on Thursday for the annual President Cup slated for today and Saturday in Agadir city of Morocco.

Confirming the latest development, a tweet from the official twitter handle of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation (NTF) Thursday evening reads: “National TKD Team arrives Casablanca, en route to Agadir for WT President Cup. Nine athletes, 4 coaches. NTF President Binga to officiate at event & WTAF member, Jonathan Nnaji, en route for WTAF congress.”

According to the tweet, while NTF President Elizabeth Binga will be officiating at the competition, Jonathan Nnaji, a member of NTF board who is also a board member of World Taekwondo Africa would take part.

However, three national champions, Benjamin Okumose, Ife Oluwa and Elizabeth Anyanacho were among the athletes who made the trip to the North African nation. The event is taking place, barely one month to next month’s World Taekwondo Championship. Three months later, the Africa Games and Olympic qualifiers would take place.

NTF technical director and three-time Olympian, Chika Chukwumerije, expressed confidence that the President Cup would be a veritable training ground for Nigerian athletes to brace up ahead of other major tournaments in the current busy sporting year. He however called for more funding support to enable the federation ensure adequate preparations.
