The Chairperson of the Board of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), Mrs Maimuna Abubakar, has drawn the ire of the nation’s income powerhouse, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), over her claim accusing the revenue agency and the National Assembly of stealing the NIPOST’s idea on stamp duties administration.

Reacting to Abubakar’s claim done via tweet yesterday evening, FIRS Director in charge of Communications and Liaison, Mr. Abdullahi Ismaila Ahmad, saw the claim as a great disservice to the government and people of Nigeria, expressing shock that such a person in reputable organization as NIPOST could cast such aspersion on the two national institutions of great repute.

The FIRS mouth piece began: “The attention of FIRS has been drawn to the infantile ranting of one Mrs. Maimuna Abubakar who, it learnt, is the Chairperson of the Board of NIPOST. Her bunkum wouldn’t have deserved any response, but for the sensitive nature of the issue at stake, which, if not sensibly treated, would likely mislead the public.

“Surely, NIPOST is a government parastatal established by Decree 41 of 1992 with the function to: develop, promote, and provide adequate and efficiently coordinated postal services at reasonable rates.”

“ This function,” he said, “is clearly contrary to the claim by NIPOST over the administration of stamp duties in Nigeria.”

“On the other hand, FIRS is the sole agency of government charged with the responsibility of assessing, collecting, and accounting for all tax types including, Stamp Duties,” he further explained, saying, “it is therefore shocking to us at the FIRS that such a vainglorious young lady who happened to be appointed to a sensitive position would throw all caution to the wind to cast aspersions on  reputable institutions like the National Assembly and the FIRS, which she accused of stealing NIPOST idea. This, to say the least, is a disservice to the government and people of Nigeria.

“We wish to state categorically that, as an agency that operates within the ambit of the law, FIRS is determined to, not only ensure that all monies collected by NIPOST into its illegally operated Stamp Duties Account, are fully remitted into the Federation Account, but also make sure that any N1 not accounted for in that account is legally recovered. And that anyone found culpable of mis-appropriatiing the funds in that account would be prosecuted.”

Then his notice: “The public is hereby reminded that we, at the FIRS, are resolute in our operations towards safeguarding the national interest, not personal ego, and or interest, as the NIPOST officials have carried on lately. We, therefore, call on right thinking Nigerians to disregard the infantile rantings of a misguided lickspittle.”
