Boko Haram eroded Borno State dividends of democracy, says Gov. Zulum

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno state has said that Boko Haram
insurgents have eroded the dividends of democracy of the state by devilish
destructive tendencies for a decade.

Zulum disclosed this on Wednesday, while addressing the people to mark
Democracy Day at Ramat Square, Maiduguri.

According to him, over 80% of state’s infrastructural facilities were
destroyed by insurgents.

His words: “Over the years, we lost greater part of our democratic
gains to the devilish acts and destructive tendencies of Boko Haram
insurgents.

“We witnessed a massive displacement of communities and high number of
Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the country.”

Consequently; he said hundreds of drop outs and out of school
children, including youths were unemployed.

He said the state had great loses in livestock, which the people had
depended, before commencement of Boko Haram insurgency in July, 2009.

On other destroyed facilities, the governor said: “In the 10-year
insurgency, there were destruction of irrigation facilities with
collapse of market and trading facilities,” stating that this led to
high levels of food insecurity.

“The task before us; is enormous, given the mean resource base of
state. We will never relent or give up,” he assured the people.
He said the state government with cooperation of stakeholders, is to
overcome the challenges of Boko Haram big mess.

According to him, the released 10-agenda during his inauguration,
articulates the state’s development framework.

Speaking on security, he said: “Within the two weeks of my assumption
of office, I have garnered support to reinorce security measures and
adopt additional strategies to counter the insurgency.

“I have taken measures to empower Civilian JTF, give logistic support
to all security operatives.”

The logistic support, according to him, will create an effective
platform for cooperation and consultations.

He said he will not hesitate ti take any action or support any
cause that could restore peace.
